POSITIONING APPLIANCE FOR ROD OR CAPILLARY AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM USING THIS APPLIANCE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an operator to carry out work of putting rods or capillaries into a quartz pipe with good accuracy in its position without the occurrence of a crack and fracture regardless of the operator's skill by a simple appliance.

SOLUTION: The positioning appliance 10 is fixed to one end of the quartz pipe 1 packed with the capillaries made of quartz. The positioning appliance 10 is made of rubber and is surely fixed to the quartz pipe 1 by a fixing section 11 projected from a body section 13. A small pore is formed at the center of the body section 13 of the positioning appliance 10 and the rod 4 made of quartz constituting a core is inserted therein. The capillary 3a existing in the central part is extruded and replaced by the rod 4. The rod 4 is held supported by the small pore during this replacement work so as to be pushed into the prescribed position in the quartz pipe 1 in parallel with the central axis of the quartz pipe 1.
