PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce reading errors by preventing tilting of a medium. SOLUTION: A medium reading device 10 comprises a first medium insertion opening 11 for passing a narrow medium and a second medium insertion opening 12 for passing a medium wider than the narrow medium. Medium detecting sensors are disposed in the medium insertion openings 11 and 12 and detect width of inserted mediums. Control part 16 determines whether the medium inserted into the medium insertion opening 11 or 12 is the narrow medium or the wider medium based on a detection result of the medium detecting sensors, and a suitable medium is taken into the device.
