PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To feed a precedent return cut sheet from the same paper feeding table while keeping a reading order of the fed cut sheets in a simple mechanism. SOLUTION: The cut sheets are continuously fed by a paper feeding roller from the paper feeding table to a handling position. When paper jam occurs in a conveying process where the handled cut sheets 13 are discharged to a discharge part by a discharge roller, or a reading failure of the discharged cut sheets occurs, a normal rotation of the paper feeding roller 3 for feeding the cut sheets from the paper feeding table 6 is stopped, feeding of the following cut sheet 13b is suspended. Then, the paper feeding roller is reversed to return the following cut sheet to the paper feeding table 6, and simultaneously the tip position of the paper feeding table 6 is evacuated from a pressure contact position of the paper feeding roller. Then, a precedent cut sheets 113a causing the running failure and reading disturbance is placed at a re-feeding position of the paper feeding table 6, and the placed cut sheets 13a are fed by the normal rotation of the paper feeding roller.
