PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the washing performance by pouring a dissolved washing water and detergent foam onto laundry in a washing-cum-dehydrating tub from the top, and at the same time, to reduce washing unevenness for a washing machine which efficiently removes contamination by the reaction of a detergent liquid and detergent foam or the like. SOLUTION: This washing machine is equipped with a circulation passage 26 which is formed between an external tub 14 and the washing-cum-dehydrating tub 15 and has an upper end opening 27 on the upper end part and a lower end opening 28 on the lower end part, and a foam-generating mechanism 32 which is provided in the vicinity of the lower end opening 28 in the circulation passage 26. The washing machine is constituted in such a manner that when the washing-cum-dehydrating tub 15 is rotated in one direction, the washing water may be discharged from the upper end opening 27 of the circulation passage 26, and when the washing-cum- dehydrating tub 15 is rotated in the other direction, the washing water may not be discharged from the upper end opening 27 of the circulation passage 26. Thus, the amount of the washing water which is discharged from the upper end opening 27 when the washing-cum-dehydrating tub 15 is rotated in one direction can be increased, and the washing performance can be improved by the circulation of a larger amount of foam and the washing water.
