<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To limit the visual field angle of a liquid crystal display device principally to the normal direction of a screen. <P>SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display device 11, a pair of polarizers 13 and 14 sandwich a liquid crystal layer 12 and retardation plates 15 are interposed between the liquid crystal layer and the polarizers. Liquid crystal molecules have 90°±5° twist angle and 370 to 530 nm value is selected as a retardation value of the liquid crystal layer 12. Each retardation plate 15 has negative refractive index anisotropy and a first principal refractive index vector parallel to the surface thereof. The inclination of a second principal refractive index vector of the retardation plate in the normal direction of the surface thereof is equal to the pretilt direction of the liquid crystal molecules in the vicinity of the surface on the retardation plate side in the liquid crystal layer. The first and the second principal refractive index vectors of the retardation plate exist in a plane containing an extraordinary light refractive index vector nqe of the liquid crystal molecules in the vicinity of the surface on the retardation plate side in the liquid crystal layer. Thereby, narrow visual field angle characteristics by which display is hardly visually confirmed when viewed from an oblique direction is obtained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
