<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup device in which the deterioration of characteristics such as a jitter characteristic and crosstalk resulting from making a beam spot shape elliptical can be prevented. <P>SOLUTION: An elliptical ratio being the ratio of a minor axis to a major axis of a beam spot caused to emit to an optical recording medium 8 is set to be equal to or greater than a prescribed value.
