The missile follows an initial path from launch (10) with error (14) under a first inertial guidance navigational system and then switches (11) to a second proportional navigational system using target (13) data to follow the final path (12). The latest possible switching time is calculated using the target distance and the angle between the missile path and the line of sight to the target.
