PURPOSE: A method for correcting gamma of video signals through nonlinear sampling is provided to perform gamma correction for an input signal having a large tilt variation using an ideal tilt of a gamma correction curve, thereby optimizing screen quality of low light and high light gradation. CONSTITUTION: A white signal is inputted and luminescence is measured(S501). A black signal is inputted and luminescence is measured(S502). The luminescences of the white signal and the black signal are assumed as 100%(S503). A luminescence(Ln) of an input signal is measured(S504). Whether the measured luminescence(Ln) is identical to a preset luminescence is compared(S505). If not, whether the preset luminescence is larger is decided(S508). If the preset luminescence is larger, an RGB(Red/Green/Blue) data value(Yn) is increased(S509). If the preset luminescence is not larger, the measured luminescence(Ln) is decided to be larger(S510) and the RGB data value(Yn) is reduced(S511). If identical in the step S505, an RGB data value(Yn) is calculated under corresponding conditions(S506) and the calculated value(Yn) is stored in a temporary memory(S507). Whether n is 255 is determined(S512). If n is not 255, n is increased by 1(one)(S513) and the step S504 is returned. If n is 255, a tilt of the data(Yn) is searched(S514). 16-step sampling is performed in order starting from data(Yn) having a larger tilt(S515). The data(Yn) are recorded in a memory(S516).
