PURPOSE: A method for minimizing current consumption on an LCD screen of a portable phone is provided to turn off an LCD if a user does not use the LCD, and to turn on the LCD for a predetermined time only when the user operates a portable phone button or a message is received, thereby reducing currents of the LCD. CONSTITUTION: A controller decides whether an LCD operational mode is normal(S300). If so, the controller decides whether a folder of a portable phone is open(S302). If so, the controller turns on an LCD(S304). If the folder is closed, the controller turns off the LCD(S306). If the LCD operational mode is not normal, the controller decides whether on/off time set of the LCD by a user elapses(S308). If so, the controller turns off the turned on LCD and turns on the turned off LCD(S310). If the on/off time does not elapse, the controller confirms whether the user operates a button or a message is received(S312). If so, the controller turns on the LCD for a predetermined time(S314).
