Disclosed is a method for classifying sleep stages of a subject. The method involves accessing one or more detected signals related to respiration movements of the subject, analysing at least a portion of the detected signals to calculate a respiration variability and determining sleep stage based on the respiration variability. The respiration variability comprising one or more of a variability of respiration rate and a variability of respiration amplitude.
