In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a method and apparatus for maximizing packet throughput on a network is disclosed. The apparatus comprises means for computing an average packet size for incoming packets. The average packet size can be dynamically changed. The apparatus also comprises means for adjusting an amount of data to be transmitted per unit of time based on the average packet size. The amount of data to be transmitted per unit of time can also by dynamically adjusted. The amount of data to be transmitted per unit of time can be based on both a processing speed of an access point and the average packet size.
