PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for automatically detecting a closed caption data form to display caption data are provided to receive a broadcasting signal including closed caption data and automatically detect the format of the closed caption data to provide caption data based on the detected format. CONSTITUTION: Information including closed caption data extracted from broadcasting signal data is received(100). Information about the format of the closed caption data is extracted from the received information including the closed caption data and judged(110,120). The closed caption data is decoded based on the judged closed caption data format and the decoded closed caption data is displayed to a user(130).
