<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor for a white LED in which the intensity of bluish green light at 480 nm in the emission spectrum is lower than before, and to provide a white LED using this phosphor. <P>SOLUTION: The phorphor for a white LED comprises a borate phorphor. The borate phorphor comprises a compound represented by the formula: mM<SP>1</SP>O-nB<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and an activator comprising one or more selected from the group consisting of Eu and Dy, wherein M<SP>1</SP>denotes one or more selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba; m is from 1 to 4; and n is from 0.5 and 10.
