The invention provides a software design system and method, in particular a software design tool for providing encoding of detailed software architecture information for generation of performance test beds. The invention provides a method of generating a high level design of a distributed system test bed, a method of generating a performance test bed, a method of definin g a meta model of a distributed system test bed, and a method of evaluating a performance test bed. The invention further provides related graphical user interfaces and methods of adding, to a software design tool, high level design generation capability of a distributed system test bed, performance test bed generation capability and performance test bed evaluation capability.
