An isolated or synthesised gene originating in, for example, Arabidopsis thaliana, having the amino acid sequence listed as SEQ ID NO:2, which may have additions, substitutions or deletions of one or more amino acids, and which codes for a protein involved in cytokinin signal transduction. The said protein is a histidine protein kinase. By introducing the said gene into the plant and the gene being expressed, it is possible to regulate various physiological functions associated with cytokinins, including: growth of a plant or plant cells, adventitious shoot formation and Horal formation period of a plant.
