An apparatus for producing cell-cell fusion comprises a chamber (20) including two electrodes (30, 32) a porous substrate (34), a substrate support (36) and a port connection (38) to a vacuum source. The electrofusion is conducted in the chamber by first placing a suspension of cells between the two electrodes, then applying a vacuum sufficient to draw liquid from the suspension toward one side (40) of the substrate and through the pores of the substrate, but not so complete as to evacuate the entire liquid medium, so that the cells in the suspension remain substantially viable. Layers of cells are maintained on the one side of the substrate, resulting in cells in contact with each other in the space between the two electrodes. After deposition, one or more DC pulses are administrated to the electrodes to induce fusion of cells that are in cell-to-cell contact between the electrodes.
