<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which a sheet conveyance path from a detection point to a transfer point is made short and whose size is made compact, while ensuring the detection accuracy by a line sensor of the edge positions of a sheet and a skew state, and in which toner recovered by a cleaner is reduced to the smallest possible amount, a period during which a container becomes full of toner is made longer, and cleaning failure is effectively prevented. <P>SOLUTION: The line sensor 51 that detects the edge positions of a recording paper sheet in two areas in the conveyance direction of the recording paper is disposed upstream of the transfer point G on a first photoreceptor drum 3a. When edge-free image formation is carried out, the skew state is detected by the detection of the edge positions of the recording paper sheet. The size of the subsequent image on the first photoreceptor drum is reduced on the basis of the edge positions of the recording paper sheet detected by the line sensor and the detection result of the skew state.
