<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method, an image processing apparatus, an image processing program and a recording medium which can simplifying processing for performing image area separation, shortening the time required for image processing by just that much, reducing circuit scale and program scale for image processing, thereby realizing cost reduction. <P>SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus A, the image processing program Q and the recording medium 300 each substitute gradations of regions of a plurality of multi-value image information inputted from an image reading apparatus 2a into a predetermined formula for obtaining a variance and the variance is obtained, determine a region as a first image area (regions of a photograph dot image) if the obtained variance is less than a predetermined value, and determine a region as a second image area (region of a character image) if it is equal to or more than the predetermined value and separate the region.
