A light source capable of meeting the requirement of high brightness and size reduction in modern lamps and of attaining long life of lamps and noise reduction of cooling fans; and a projector. A light source comprising a reflecting section (6C) reflecting light, non-reflecting section (6D) connecting to the reflecting section, and vent holes (6E, 6F) passing through the non-reflecting section, a forwardly opened concave mirror (6), a lamp (10) disposed in the concave mirror and radiating light, and a light-permeable member (8) disposed forwardly of the lamp to cover the opening in the concave mirror, the light source being characterized in that the concave mirror including a mesh (12) disposed in the position to cover the vent holes, and a protective wall (14) disposed in the position to prevent lamp fragments resulting from the bursting of the lamp from directly hitting the mesh, thus protecting the mesh. |
