<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform preparation of a mask image and inspection of print quality without lowering the efficiency of a printing operation and by an inexpensive system. <P>SOLUTION: An image of a printed matter printed on the basis of digital data for printing and intended to be a reference and a printed matter to be inspected are picked up by an image input means 3 and thereby a reference image 55 and an inspection image 57 are obtained. A difference image 59 showing a difference in the luminance of each pixel between the reference image 55 and the inspection image 57 is prepared, while the mask image 53 showing a threshold for the luminance of each pixel of the difference image 59 is prepared on the basis of the digital data for printing.
