Automated process for making a projecting tongue to facilitate removal of protective strip on adhesive surface of extrusion uses end of strip on detachable portion of extrusion

The process, for use e.g. on self-adhesive sealing extrusions or mouldings used in motor vehicle manufacture where the adhesive surface is covered by a protective strip (10), consists of making the extrusion/ moulding (2) slightly longer than required and cutting partly through it to make a detachable portion (37) on its end that leaves a projecting end (27) of the protective strip when it is removed. The projecting end forms a tongue that can be gripped to pull off the protective strip before the extrusion/moulding is applied to a supporting surface. The adhesive surface on the extrusion/moulding can be a double-sided adhesive strip, a layer of a compact or expanded cellular adhesive, or a bead.
