Provided is a method for producing scandium oxide that makes it possible to produce scandium oxide having a suppressed sulfur content when obtaining scandium oxide from scandium oxalate containing sulfur compounds as impurities. The method for producing scandium oxide according to the present invention includes a first heating step for heating scandium oxalate containing sulfur-containing compounds as impurities in an oxygen-free atmosphere and a second heating step for further heating the heated product obtained by the first heating step in an atmosphere in which oxygen is present. The scandium oxalate used in this production method is, for example, a precipitate obtained by adding oxalic acid to a sulfuric acid acidic solution containing scandium. Additionally, a solution obtained by adding a neutralizing agent to a leachate obtained by leaching nickel oxide ore by sulfuric acid can be used as the sulfuric acid acidic solution.
