PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the brightness reproducibility of an object by calculating an index quantitatively representing a photographic scene from photographic image data, and deciding image processing conditions based on the calculated index.

SOLUTION: This image adjustment processing part 701 divides photographic image data into regions constituted of the combination of predetermined brightness and hue, and calculates an occupancy rate showing the rate of the occupancy of each of the divided regions to the overall photographic image data, and calculates an index to specify a photographic scene by multiplying the calculated occupancy rate of each region by a coefficient preliminarily set according to photographic conditions. Then, the photographic scene of the photographic image data is discriminated based on the calculated index, and a method for gradation adjustment for the photographic image data is decided according to the discriminated photographic scene. Then, gradation conversion processing is operated to the photographic image data by using the decided gradation adjusting method.
