<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the life of a self-aligning roller bearing by reducing tangential force operating between a roller and an inner ring. <P>SOLUTION: The roller 3 of the self-aligning roller bearing is produced by machining a raw material of a steel having a friction coefficient lower than that of a high carbon chromium bearing steel (SUJ2) into a predetermined shape and then applying carbonitriding, hardening and annealing treatment thereto. The N-content of a surface layer portion as the rolling surface of the roller 3 is 0.30 mass% or more and 2.00 mass% or less, the C-content of the surface layer portion is 1.00 mass% or more and 2.00 mass% or less, and the amount of austenite residing in the surface layer portion is 5 vol% or more and 20 vol% or less. The surface roughness of each of the rolling surface of the roller 3 and a raceway surface 1a of the inner ring 1 is less than the surface roughness of a raceway surface 2a of an outer ring 2. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
