The device has a carriage with fingers (221, 222) displacing shift forks (230, 250) to engage transmission ratios. A spacer has peripheral sectors (212, 213) of large diameter cooperating with jaw clutches driving the forks. The number of fingers is equal to number of sectors. The fingers and the sectors are disposed symmetrically relative to an axis of the spacer, where each finger is comprised between two sectors. The spacer is axially fixed and rotatably moved to drive the carriage in rotation.
