<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alumina substrate for mounting a photoelectric conversion element having high photoelectric conversion efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The alumina substrate contains barium sulfate in a content of 2-6 mass%, and thereby has improved light reflectance in comparison with that of a substrate comprising only alumina. The increase of the water absorption rate caused by barium sulfate can be kept low.
