<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely correct image data, by accurately detecting a lateral dislocation quantity in the width direction to sheets different in the size in the width direction. <P>SOLUTION: This sheet carrying device has a paper feeding tray capable of placing the sheets of a plurality of sizes different in the length in the width direction of the sheets orthogonal to the carrying direction of the sheets, and a carrying means for carrying the sheets on the paper feeding tray to a predetermined processing position; and has a sheet position detecting means having a plurality of light emitting means 43a and 43b respectively arranged in a position corresponding to a different sheet width and one light receiving element 44 movable to a position corresponding to the plurality of light emitting elements, a light receiving position detecting means for detecting a position of the light receiving element 44, and a control means for selecting one of the plurality of light emitting elements 43a and 43b on the basis of a detecting result of this light receiving position detecting means.
