The main vertical drive shaft of a gas distributor for a sewage pond is rotated on its axis by a drive mounted on the platform which supports the shaft. The drive is keyed at key guide block 94 to the shaft to selectively allow axial movement of the shaft through the drive and includes a ring gear 84 around the upper end of the shaft which rotates the drive sleeve 86 with the key connection, the ring gear having an inwardly facing surface supported on bearings 82, and a selectively driven pinion gear 90 directly and drivably engaging the ring gear and being driven by a motor 92. The diameter of the pinion gear is smaller that that of the ring gear. Projecting horizontally from near the bottom of the drive shaft are a set of blades stirring through the porridge in which they are immersed and via which air is pumped and distributed into the porridge.
