Tetrachloropyrimidine is obtained by reacting barbituric acid in phosphorus oxychloride in the absence of water with 2À9 to 3À5 mols of phosphorus trichloride per mol of barbituric acid and 4 to 5 mols of chlorine per mol of barbituric acid with warming, with or without a catalyst. The chlorination may be carried out in a stepwise manner without isolation of the intermediates. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds.
