1296837 Halogenated hydrocarbon compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 April 1970 [29 April 1969] 21814/69 Addition to 1157190 Heading C5D A composition for cleaning and for drying articles comprises a chlorohydrocarbon or bromohydrocarbon solvent, a metal, ammonium or amine salt of the mono-sulphonic acid derivative of a di-ester of a substituted or unsubstituted succinic acid in an amount of at least 0À5% by weight of the composition and at least 1% by wt. of water. The sulphonic acid has the formula wherein R and R 1 may be the same or different and each represents H, alkyl or aryl and R 2 and R 3 may be the same or different and each represents an alkyl, cycloaliphatic, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group containing 4 to 13 C atoms, which may be substituted. Preferably, a non-ionic surfactant is present, e.g. a condensate of an alkylene oxide (e.g. ethylene oxide) with an alkyl phenol, fatty alcohol, fatty amine or fatty amide. For drying, the water content of the composition is kept to a minimum, but for cleaning, oil-in-water emulsions containing up to 50% by wt. of water may be used. Optional ingredients are ammonia, metal brightening agents, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, metal chelating agents and solvent stabilizers such as nitroalkanes, epoxides, amines, alkanolamines, cyclic ethers, ketones, substituted phenols, pyrroles and propargyl alcohol. The solvents may be trichloroethylene, perchlorethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, dichloroethylenes, methylene dichloride, 2,3-dibromobutane, n-butyl bromide, chlorobromomethane and bromotrichloromethane.
