In a process for producing bulked synthetic polymeric yarn by false twist crimping and by subsequent heating in a controlled longitudinally-contracted state, yarn feed-stock in a drawable state is fed via feed rolls 2 to false twist means 4 and is withdrawn by takeout rolls 3 so that the yarn is drawn at a point located at the upstream end of a heater 5 by which twist is set within the drawing and false-twisting zone, the take-out rolls 3 being rotated at a peripheral speed higher than that of the feed rolls 2 by an amount equivalent to the desired draw ratio and incomplete snubbing of the twist occurring in the drawing zone. The drawable yarn is preferably a polyamide or polyester yarn, and the draw ratio is substantially 3.2. The drawing of the yarn takes place within the first few inches of contact with the heater 5. The crimped yarn may be subjected to a heat treatment either before or after winding-up e.g. by means of steaming or combined with a dyeing process. The yarn is allowed to contract by at least 10% between the take-out rolls 3 and the wind-up means 6.</p> |
