The garment, e.g. a pullover is formed by knitting the tubular body and sleeve portions up to the armpits on the main needle beds of the machine, and knitting extensions to the sleeves (pref. on auxiliary needle beds) which are joined at their edes to opposed flat extensions of the body portion to define shoulder portions. Pref. these shoulder portions are formed from U-shaped courses.
