摘要 1364244 Coatings IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 49969/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A process for preparing "pigmented" solid particles of a film-forming polymer (F) comprises the steps of (a) emulsifying the polymer (F) as the liquid disperse phase in a volatile liquid continuous phase (L) which has dissolved therein a defined polymeric emulsifying agent (E); (b) before or after (a), blending with (F) a "pigment" (P) which is optionally dispersed in a volatile liquid (V) which is miscible with the liquid continuous phase (L) of (a) and is a non-solvent for (F), and then (c) volatilising the votatile liquid to produce "pigmented" solid particles of polymer. (E) is defined as containing at least one component chain which is soluble in (F) and at least one component chain of another type which is soluble in (L), the average M.W. of the individual component chains being at least 1000 and the total M.W. of all the chains of each type being at least 3000. "Pigment" is defined as including extenders or fillers conventionally used in the paint industry. Specified materials are:- (F) epoxy resins, polyester resins, melamine/HCHO precondensates, blends of epoxy resin and phenol/HCHO precondensate or of polyesters and melamine/HCHO resins, acrylic polymers and polyamide; (E) the polymers of Specifications 1,211,532 and 1,122,397 in which the (L)-soluble chain may be polymers of C 4 or higher esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids, of vinyl esters of C 9-18 each, of w-alkenyl ethers of polyalkylene glycols, or of olefines or diolefines, or polyesters of hydroxyacids or of diacids and diols, and the (F)-soluble chain may be epoxy resins or copolymers of methyl methacrylate and up to 10% methacrylic acid; (L) aliphtic and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, ethers and water, (V) is preferably of the same type as (L); and (P) carbon black, TiO 2 , Al, iron oxide, chromes, phthalocyamine blues and greens, barytes, china clay, talc and silica. A catalyst for (F) and a flow-control agent may be included in the emulsion and conventional dispersing agents may be included in the pigment dispersion. Step (c) is preferably effected by spray drying to give pigmented powder particles of average diameter 10 to 300 microns. In specific Examples (F) is (Exs. 1 to 5) an epoxy resin or mixture of epoxy resins, or (Ex. 6) a polyester of phthalic anhydride with 2,2-dimethylpropan-1,3-diol and trimethylol propane, and (E) is a graft copolymer of poly(1,2-hydroxystearic acid) on (Exs. 1 to 5) a 99/1 methyl methacrylate/methacrylate/hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer. Coating processes. The products are useful for "powder coatings" e.g. by fluidised bed, electrostatic spray or flame spray techniques. For electrostatic spray the preferred particle size is 10 to 90 microns and for fluidised bed 10 to 300 microns. In Ex. 5 the powder product is applied to a degreased steel panel and heated at 150‹C for 30 minutes.
