1385704 Pneumatic tyres DUNLOP Ltd 10 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 5249/71 Heading B7C A pneumatic tyre, e.g. an aircraft or racing car tyre, comprises a rubber tread 11 having an outer wearable portion separated from an inner portion bonded to the tyre carcass 10 by a single layer 12 of parallel filaments having a modulus of elasticity greater than 50 x 1010 dynes/cm.2 and a melting point above 300‹ C., the layer 12 being intended to prevent stripping off of successive layers of the tread which may occur during use of the tyre continuing to the point where the tyre will burst. The filaments may be of steel, carbon, or glass, and may be disposed at 0-50 degrees to the tyre mid-circumferential plane. The tyre illustrated in Fig. 1 is an aircraft tyre whose carcass 10 is a cross-ply carcass of 12-18 nylon cord plies with a cord angle of 33 degrees, and may be provided with a layer of nylon cord fabric in the outer portion of the tread which extends into ground-contacting ribs forming the tread pattern of the tyre. In an alternative embodiment, (Fig. 2, not shown), the tyre is a racing car tyre having an aspect ratio of 40%, a tread which is 8-15 inches wide and flat in transverse profile, and a cross-ply carcass of four plies of nylon cord fabric with a cord angle of 20-27 degrees. The layer 12 may, as shown, extend across the full width of the tread in one span or may alternatively be divided into three parts located respectively beneath the central and the two shoulder regions of the tread.
