Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1107745/C2/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, bromoaryl, carboxylic acyl or aralkyl group, the R groups being the same or different, are obtained by hydrogenating an olefinic compound of the formula <FORM:1107745/C2/2> under conditions such that only the olefinic bond is reduced, one or both of the phenolic groups optionally being etherified or acylated before or after the hydrogenation. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic properties and useful for promoting the growth of meat-producing animals, contain the above compounds as active ingredient. The composition may be in a form suitable for oral or parenteral application, e.g. as a constituent of an animal foodstuff. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 951,349. |
