1394569 Applying adhesive tape to cartons UNILEVER Ltd 21 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 11330/71 Heading B8F In a machine for sealing cartons by means of pregummed tape, the tape is clamped along its entire length whilst the glue sets. A partly erected carton is placed on runners 2 as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 1, where it may be loaded and the top panels folded down. Tape from a reel 9 is fed by a knurled driven roller 12 past a moistening brush 18 to a guide 19 in position A which directs the leading end of the tape between the case and the front plate 40 of a carriage 34, and the driven roller 12 is then disconnected. The rear plate 35 of carriage 34 is moved forward pneumatically clamping the leading ends of the tape between the case and front plate 40 and squaring the ends of the core. Arms 20 are moved to position B, and the carriage is moved pneumatically along guide rails (not shown) whilst tape is pulled from the reels 9 and progressively applied by spring loaded side clamps 25, and two top guides 32 hold the top panels of the carton closed. At a predetermined position of the carriage 34 the tape is severed by cutter 17, and when it reaches the second station arms 20 are returned to position A, and near tape clamps 23 wipe the trailing ends of the tape around the end of the case and clamp it. Front plate 40 is lowered pneumatically, enabling front tape clamps 29 to swing to position C to clamp the leading ends of the tape. The carriage 34 is returned to the first station and front plate 40 raised through cut outs 50 in the runners 2 ready to receive the next carton. The sequence is then repeated and as the carriage moves towards the second station it pushes the previous case out of the apparatus. |
