The materials consist of inorganic particles coated over virtually their whole surface with a homo- or copolymer from radical-polymerisable monomers with >=1 oxygen, nitrogen or halogen atom or phenyl group in the side chains. They are made by polymerising the monomers in non-polar fluids which dissolve the monomers but not the polymers, in presence of the inorganic material and a polymsn. initiator. The particles are of CaSO3, CaCO3, SiO2, Fe2O3, carbon or glass fibre, and the monomers are methyl methacrylate or acrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl chloride or acetate. The materials give moulded products with better strength than dry mixts. of inorganic particles and resins, or particles coated using polymer solns.
