Compressed air is passed through a non-return valve into the chamber in the lower section of the shuttle, the base of which is composed of two perforated plates which can slide in use. As friction resistance is encountered, the lower plate slides back to expose partially the perforations for the air to escape and build up an air cushion. The purpose is to overcome friction resistance in the shuttle's path across the loom to increase shuttle speed and reduce wear on the shuttle and loom path components.
