Cpds of formula (I): (where R1 and R2 are 1-5C alkyl, pref. Me) are prepd by chlorinating a cpd of formula (II): with a cpd supplying positive chloride ions, pref. Nacl or chloramine, in a neutral or basic medium. Pref. >=2 moles of chlorinating agent are used per mole of (II). The use of a basic or neutral medium shifts the tautomeric equilibrium of (II) in the direction of the reactive pyridinol form, and avoids corrosion problems (I) are coccidiostate.
