The vertical drive shaft carries a top cover plate from which a number of paddle vanes, approx. perpendicular to it, point downwards and are partly covered by a lower deflector plate at a given spacing from their lower edges. This spacing is not >15% of the wheel dia and >=1 cm esp. 10-% of the dia. It may be plane or conical and have a lower skirt acting as a cylindrical suction guide duct. Appts. provides increased suction effect and hence improved aeration.
