Ammonium nitrate prills of moisture content not greater than 0À25% by weight, have dispersed therein from 0À25% to 4À0% of a nucleating agent of particle size not greater than 40 microns, which is insoluble in molten ammonium nitrate. Preferably the prills are uncoated and the additive is one or more of aluminium silicate-containing clays, calcium silicate, and magnesium silicate-containing clays. The prills are produced by mixing the additive with molten ammonium nitrate and allowing the mixture to pass through prilling orifices and fall freely through a countercurrent flow of cooling gas. |
