The guide element (5) is intended for a carriage (2) which is vertically movable along guideways (4) of a machine tool. It comprises an annular contact face (10) which contains an annular groove (8) for a sealing ring (9) and surrounds an oil chamber (12) whose open side faces the corresponding guideway. The oil in the chamber is not pressurised. Each element is secured, e.g. against a side (3) of the carriage, by screws (6) extending through bores in the bottom of the annular groove in the direction away from the annular contact face. The oil chamber may connect to an oil duct (13) with a nipple.
