The turbidity points of aqueous solutions of conventional sulphate and/or sulphonate detergent materials are lowered by addition of an effective amount of at least one sulphosuccinic acid derivative having one of the formulae <FORM:1073684/C4-C5/1> or <FORM:1073684/C4-C5/2> where m is an integer of 7-17, n is zero or an integer from 1-6, X is an oxygen atom or an imino, alkyl-imino or alkylolimino group, one of Y and Z is a hydrogen atom and the other is the group SO3M, and M is a salt-forming cation, e.g. any Group I, II or III metal, ammonium, alkylamine or alkylolamine. M is preferably sodium. Conventional detergents mentioned are fatty alcohol sulphates (e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate), fatty alcohol ether sulphates, alkaryl sulphonates (e.g. sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate), and nonyl-phenol polyglycol ether sulphate. Optional additives may be present, e.g. alkylolamides and phosphates. |
