Mixing solid material with high viscosity liquids - in which the friction induced heat of mixing melts the solid material

A particulate thermoplastic or elastomer and a high viscosity liquid (e.g. bitumen, tar) are mixed in a high speed mixer having a high speed rotating paddle for a short duration, and the heat induced by friction during mixing causes the thermoplastic or elastomer to melt or form a homogeneous mixture with the liquid. The mixing may be carried out at 220 degrees C and the particulate material may be added in two stages. A homogeneous mixture can be produced in 30-35 mins without auxiliary heaters and without degradation of the thermoplastic or elastomer. The mixture is used as a roofing material.
