Aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly monocyclic hydrocarbons, are hydrogenated without substantial hydrocracking in the presence of a catalyst prepared by impregnating or ion-exchanging platinum onto a previously stabilized Y zeolite base, followed by drying and calcining at temperatures above 1,000 DEG F. The final, high-temperature calcination gives markedly improved hydrogenation activity as compared to calcination at lower temperatures.
