1401404 Modulating light CITIZEN WATCH CO Ltd 17 July 1973 [21 July 1972 29 Jan 1973 8 May 1973] 33921/73 Heading H4F In a "twist" liquid crystal display cell, nematic material is disposed between transparent electrode films on glass substrates peripherally sealed by a low melting point glass layer, and molecular alignment adjacent each film is produced by forming parallel grooves therein, e.g. by rubbing with diamond paste, or by oblique vapour deposition thereon of a thin heat resisting film, of SiO, Cr, Al or Au, for example. As shown in Fig. 1, the peripheral sealing layer 3 on one substrate 1 may be provided with a filling opening 4, and a notch 5 for engagement of a metal pin (6) projecting from the other substrate, to permit connection to the associated electrode layer. In other embodiments, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), a filling aperture is formed ultrasonically in one of the substrates, and the adjacent area metallized by firing with an Ag/Pd paste. After filling, a metal plug is inserted in the aperture and sealed with a low melting metal. Alternatively a pipe is sealed in the aperture with a low melting metal prior to filling, and is subsequently sealed by forcedly inserting a metal plug. |
