1401774 Continuous production of petroleum resins IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Nov 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 58226/71 Heading C3P A process for the continuous production of petroleum resins comprises continuously polymerizing an unsaturated hydrocarbon feedstock in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst by passing the feedstock through a plurality of polymerization zones alternating with cooling zones and adding catalyst to each polymerization zone. The feedstock may be heat-soaked to dimerize cyclopentadiene. The catalyst may be a halide of aluminium, iron, tin, boron, zinc, antimony or titanium, optionally together with hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide and/or an aromatic solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene, cumene or p-cymene. The reactor may comprise 2 to 8, preferably 3 to 5, pairs of alternating zones in the form of tubular reactors. The cooling zones may be water-cooled. The catalyst may be removed from the product by treating with aqueous alkali, ammonia or C 1-4 alkanol. |
