<p>1359914 Cooling towers BALCKE-DURR AG 20 Oct 1972 [5 Nov 1971 1 Sept 1972] 48379/72 Headings F4K and F4S The shell 8 of a wet or dry cooling tower is carried by a lattice of pretensioned cables 4 supported from a central column 1 which extends upwardly beyond the upper edge of the tower shell, said upper edge being formed by a tie ring 2 suspended by oblique carrying cables 3 from the central column 1. The lattice cables preferably comprise two groups 4a, 4b of oppositely inclined cables and a further group comprising either vertical cables 4c as shown, or horizontal cables (4d, Fig. 5). At selected crossing points the cables of the respective groups may be clamped together (Figs. 4 and 6). Additional tie rings such as 5 and 11 may be provided at the lower end and at intermediate points of the tower shell. The lower end of the shell may merge from a circular to a square or rectangular section and is secured to the foundations 7 either by holding cables 6 as shown in Fig. 1, or by extensions of the lattice cables 4 as shown in Fig. 3. Guy cables 10 may also be provided. Carried by the cables 3 at the upper end of the tower are baffle rings 9 of aerofoil cross-section which serve to channel the exhaust air and to reduce air turbulence at the tower outlet. The tower shell which is applied to the lattice may comprise plates, annular plate elements, or a one-piece structure of plastics, plastics foam, plastics foil, asbestoscement plates, concrete, or aluminium. The lattice cables may be of metal or of plastics material. For maintenance and inspection purposes a spiral staircase or a lift may be installed inside the central column and support surfaces may be provided on the column for a rotatable, vertically-adjustable crane.</p> |
