1459293 Battery terminal connections GLOBE-UNION Inc 15 Feb 1974 [14 March 1973] 7005/74 Heading H1B [Also in Division B3] In making a battery terminal connection through an opening in a wall of the battery box a first metallic member is positioned on one side of the wall, an extending portion of the member being positioned in the opening to project to the other side of the wall, a second metallic member is placed over the extending portion of the first member, the contacting portions of the first and second members are fluidized and the portion of the wall between the members is rendered plastic, by applying a force to the members and applying a welding current through the members while maintaining the force, the current is terminated, the force is released, the heated portions are allowed to cool and the members are forced together with said portion of the wall therebetween. In an embodiment a hole is punched in a plastics wall of a battery case leaving an annulus 12 Fig. 2 around the opening 14. A front member 15 cast from an antimony lead alloy with a steel nut embedded therein has an extending portion 16 which is placed through the hole 14. A back member 18 of the same alloy has a compartment 19 which is frictionally engaged with the end of the portion 16, but before fitting the member 15 an annular wax or other thermoplastic material bead 20 is provided on the portion 16. Welding current is then passed through the assembly while pressure is applied to the members to melt the adjacent areas of the members and to render plastic the wall around the opening. A lower initial pressure may be applied before the current is applied and a higher pressure is then applied and continued after current is terminated. Alternatively the current and pressure may be applied at the same time. The members are allowed to cool (e.g. for 2 mins.) and are pressed together with a forging pressure with plastic wall between them. A preferred back member 18 Fig. 11 is provided with a recess containing a hemispherical projection 29 and a lug 24 upstanding from a battery plate 41 has a projection 28 to fit into the recess over the projection 29. The back member 18 is then resistance welded to the lug 24. A conveyer for conveying the battery box carrying the welded members to a hydraulic ram means is provided on a swaging machine for mechanically upsetting the welded members.
