A bobbin handling device for transferring bobbins from a storage area to a processing machine (e.g. a cabling or cording device) and vice versa comprises a pair of parallel layers located in ahcnnels in the floor and extending between the store area and the processing machine, and two carriages which are movable on rollers along associated rails. Each carriage has a support spindle and the rails are movable (e.g. by a ram actuated crank mechanism) between a lower position in which the support spindles of the two carriages locate beneath a bobbin resting on the floor of the store area, and an upper position in which the bobbin is supported above the floor on the spindles. The carriages can then be moved (e.g. by a motor driven belt) along the rails to transport the bobbin to the processing machine. Pref. the rails comprise two opposed channel sections in which the rollers of the carriage run. Large numbers of bobbins can be handled rapidly.
